learn to be on mission and adult at the same time

GenSEND
Daily Life Info

GenSEND is about learning to follow Jesus and be missional in a context with great need for the Gospel.  Part of the training is learning to ADULT in a healthy and sustainable way.

Known as “America’s Finest City” by locals and tourists alike, San Diego is a gem on the West Coast.

San Diego is the 8th largest city in the US, offering urban convenience without the sprawl. It’s surrounded by miles of Pacific Ocean beaches, mountains, and a temperate year round climate. The population of SD County has ballooned to 3.5 million, with another 2 million right on the Mexican Border in Tijuana.

While the city is spectacular, there is a tremendous need for the Gospel of Jesus.

Only 6-8% of the population is estimated to be connected at an Evangelical church, leaving well over 3 million people in SD unchurched.

Financial concerns, lack of balance in work/personal life, a city wide housing shortage, and more contribute to stress and a lack of real community. Many residents are hungry for spiritual health and wholeness, even though they often don’t slow down to consider their spiritual needs. We believe there are many in San Diego who are primed to turn to Christ, and as we share the hope of the Gospel, we often see people respond by taking steps to connect with Jesus more.

We are praying for spiritual hunger and revival that only Jesus can bring!

God has been faithfully answering our prayers for laborers, and our churches are partnering like never before to share Jesus and meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in His Name. San Diego includes an incredibly diverse population of military families, college & international students, professionals, refugees, immigrants, cultural influencers, and more. We are praying and trusting God to show His grace, truth, and power through our churches, and for us to become a global sending family of churches in this global sending city.

+ Rides from approved host church members Members (Do this rarely).
+
Uber/Lyft*
*You may use this option in groups of 2 or more, like all travel options. Be sure to share your ride status and location with someone outside the car.

NOT AN OPTION

+ You may not ride with residents of the community.
+ You may not drive any vehicle this summer. Doing so is a violation of your contract and will result in you being sent home. (Unless approved prior to the summer with permission, you know who you are).

This is the San Diego Metro Transit System (SDMTS) App.  When using the app, hold your phone 5 to 6 inches below the validator to scan your barcode.  You can add Pex Card and pay within the app.

About your Pex Card

1.) Take a picture of the card on the front & back so that you know what to do if it’s lost.
2.) KEEP THE ENVELOPE!! It has important information about how to report a lost/stolen card or a fraudulent charge.
3.) Download the Pex app.
4.) Follow these steps for card setup in the Pex app:
+ Birthdate: 01/01/2000 (not your own birthdate.) Zip Code: 30022
+ Can be used as “Debit” or “Credit.”  For Debit, PIN is 30022
+ Cannot be used for cash advances.  Please use your own personal debit cards to obtain cash as needed – then you can “pay yourself back” in kind with the PEX card.
+ DO NOT USE for “Byrd” or street bikes/scooters – it will LOCK your account.
+ FYI – Sometimes Square payment kiosks reject Pex cards; be mindful when purchasing.
+ In the event of a problem with your Pex Card, call Pex first

This is the Pex Card App.  Set it up and follow the instructions upon receiving the card.

Ministry Purposes

+ Groceries
+ Gas
+ Food
+ Bedding
+ Transportation
+ Those in need you meet*
*Please discuss these purchases with your GenSend family/leadership

Not Ministry Purposes

+ Clothes (wants vs needs)
+ Event Tickets
+ Zoo Pass, Disneyland, Seaworld
+ Concerts (Bro-Am is a free concert experience)
+ Padres’ Games, etc. (FYI: we plan to attend a game on 7/8)
+ Personal Shopping (if not life needs)
+ Souvenirs

Budgeting & Expenses

Your Expense (PEX) Card is NAMB funding for meals, travel, and incidentals in the city during the 8 weeks of GenSEND.

+ Please keep in mind that you are “Living Life on Mission” while you are serving in your city. Please figure out ways to live like a missionary – because you are one!
+ Don’t go out and eat steak at every meal; instead, buy groceries and make your own meals! Btw, you don’t pay sales tax on groceries in SD, so buying groceries saves a lot of money.
+ Consider sharing staples type items & fixing “Family Meals”. Use mealtimes for fellowship with your team and neighbors.

We expect you to utilize a budget and manage your funds wisely within your family groups.

+ Running out of funds will mean that you are using your own money to pay for the rest of your expenses.
+ Take a picture of your card (front and back) so that you know what to do if it’s lost.
+
Remember, this is Missionary Development Training. We have limited resources, so utilize them in the best way possible.
+ It’s even better if you can save a little extra to do something to bless your church or people in the community in which you serve toward the end of the summer.

Get with your family group to discuss your budget, setting a reasonable plan.

+ We suggest you decide how much you can spend per week and evaluate where you are at the end of every week.
+ When buying groceries, it is easier for one person to swipe their card for all.
+ You can take turns and keep track of who has swiped for major totals.
+ Track the amounts each of you are spending so it is even.

Procedure if your card gets lost or stolen

+ If your card is lost or stolen, follow the information in the envelope & send an email to jcape@namb.net.
NOTE: Emails received after “normal business hours” will be responded to the next business day – therefore it is IMPERATIVE that you follow the instructions in the envelope!
NOTE: It will take about 10 days to get a card replaced if it is lost or stolen.
+ If your card has to be replaced, you will need to work out an agreement with one of your GenSender friends to help pay for your expenses
+ Then you will need to “repay” them when you receive your new card.
+ IF NEEDED, we can transfer fund from an account to another student’s account.
